Hapag-Lloyd launches real-time container tracking tool

On May 1, 2024, Hapag-Lloyd announced the rollout of its innovative digital tool, Live Position, which provides real-time tracking for dry containers across its nearly 3 million unit fleet. This new service allows Hapag-Lloyd customers to monitor their shipments from the point of origin to their final destination.

Currently, over two-thirds of Hapag-Lloyd’s dry container fleet is equipped with state-of-the-art tracking devices, with the company aiming for full fleet coverage by the upcoming summer.

Dr. Maximilian Rothkopf, Chief Operating Officer at Hapag-Lloyd, highlighted the strategic benefits of this advancement, stating, “Live Position virtually eliminates the blind spots in global logistics, facilitating real-time decision-making and enhancing risk management for our clients. This technology also streamlines the management of our container fleet, boosting operational efficiency.”

The installed IoT devices provide a wealth of real-time data, including GPS location, temperature conditions, and vibration monitoring, ensuring that all parameters of cargo transport are under constant surveillance.

Henrik Schilling, Head of Global Commercial Development, reflected on the positive feedback received during the pilot phase of the project: “Our pilot participants have greatly appreciated our efforts to address one of their primary concerns—visibility and control over their shipments. We are now excited to extend this capability to all our customers, enhancing their experience and involvement with further product developments.”

As part of the ongoing enhancement of Live Position, Hapag-Lloyd is developing ways to integrate tracking data directly into customers’ operational systems through APIs. Another forthcoming feature is the prediction of Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA), which will further refine the logistics management process.

For this initiative, Hapag-Lloyd has partnered with Nexxiot and ORBCOMM, leading companies in asset intelligence, to leverage their expertise in technology and data solutions.

This move follows the successful implementation of real-time monitoring for Hapag-Lloyd’s reefer container fleet in 2019, underscoring the company’s commitment to innovation and its ambition to maintain its position among the top five global container lines.

This series of technological upgrades signifies Hapag-Lloyd’s dedication to providing transparent and efficient service solutions in the competitive field of global shipping.
